But India’s freedom struggle was powered by countless other patriots whose stories were overshadowed or erased from mainstream history. These forgotten heroes of Indian independence made incredible sacrifices, often paying with their lives, yet remain largely unrecognized. This blog pays tribute to these unsung freedom fighters who played pivotal roles in liberating India from British rule.

1. Birsa Munda – The Tribal Revolutionary

Birsa Munda led the Munda Rebellion (Ulgulan) in the late 19th century against British colonial rule and missionary efforts to convert tribals. He united indigenous communities in modern-day Jharkhand and fought for tribal land rights. Though he died young at 25, he is revered as a god-like figure among tribals and a symbol of resistance.

2. Matangini Hazra – The Gandhi Buri of Bengal

At 73, Matangini Hazra joined the Quit India Movement and led a procession in Tamluk (West Bengal). Despite being shot, she kept marching with the national flag in her hands, chanting “Vande Mataram” until her last breath. She symbolizes courage, resilience, and women’s role in India’s freedom struggle.

3. Peer Ali Khan – The First Martyr of 1857

One of the earliest revolutionaries, Peer Ali Khan was a key figure in the 1857 revolt in Patna. A bookbinder by trade, he distributed revolutionary pamphlets and organized resistance. He was captured and hanged by the British, becoming one of the first martyrs of Indian independence.

4. Velu Nachiyar – The Warrior Queen Who Defied the British

Predating the 1857 revolt, Rani Velu Nachiyar from Tamil Nadu waged war against the British in the 1780s. After years in exile, she returned with an army and became the first Indian queen to fight and reclaim her kingdom from British control. Her strategy and bravery remain an inspiration.

5. Alluri Sitarama Raju – The Hero of Rampa Rebellion

A guerrilla warfare expert, Alluri Sitarama Raju led the Rampa Rebellion (1922-24) in Andhra Pradesh. He rallied tribal communities against British exploitation and disrupted colonial operations. His legendary bravery earned him the title “Manyam Veerudu” (Hero of the Jungle).
