1. First Indo-Pak War (1947–1948) – The Kashmir Conflict Begins

Background:

Just after independence in 1947, Pakistan-backed tribal militias invaded Jammu & Kashmir,
hoping to capture it by force. The Maharaja of Kashmir chose to accede to India in return for military help.

Key Events:

  • Indian troops were airlifted into Kashmir.
  • A full-scale war broke out between the Indian Army and Pakistani-backed forces.

Outcome:

  • The war ended with a UN-mediated ceasefire in 1949.
  • Kashmir was divided into India-administered Jammu & Kashmir and
    Pakistan-administered territories (PoK).
  • The Line of Control (LoC) was established, but Kashmir remained a disputed region.

2. Second Indo-Pak War (1965) – The Battle for Kashmir Resurfaces

Background:

Pakistan launched Operation Gibraltar, sending soldiers disguised as civilians into Kashmir to incite rebellion.

Key Events:

  • India responded strongly, crossing the international border into Lahore and Sialkot.
  • Fierce tank battles and air combat took place.

Outcome:

  • The war ended in a stalemate with the Tashkent Agreement signed in January 1966
    (mediated by the Soviet Union).
  • Both countries agreed to withdraw to pre-war positions.
  • No significant territorial changes occurred, but tensions deepened.

3. Third Indo-Pak War (1971) – The Birth of Bangladesh

Background:

In East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), a civil war broke out due to political and ethnic
discrimination. Millions of refugees fled to India. In response, India supported the Bangladesh Liberation Movement.

Key Events:

  • On December 3, 1971, Pakistan launched preemptive air strikes on Indian airbases.
  • India retaliated by attacking both East and West Pakistan.
  • The Indian Army, in collaboration with Mukti Bahini (Bangladeshi freedom fighters),
    advanced rapidly

Outcome:

  • Pakistan surrendered on December 16, 1971.
  • Over 90,000 Pakistani soldiers were taken as prisoners of war.
  • Bangladesh was officially formed as an independent nation.
  • This was India’s most decisive military victory.

4. Kargil War (1999) – War at the Roof of the World

Background:

In 1999, Pakistani soldiers and militants infiltrated the Indian side of the Kargil region in
Ladakh. The operation, planned by Pakistan’s army without the civilian government’s full
knowledge, aimed to cut off Indian supply lines to Siachen

Key Events:

  • India launched Operation Vijay to recapture the occupied heights.
  • Intense fighting took place at high altitudes (above 16,000 feet).
  • The Indian Air Force also played a crucial role with Operation Safed Sagar.

Outcome:

  • India successfully regained most of the territory.
  • Pakistan was internationally condemned and forced to withdraw.
  • This conflict exposed Pakistan’s use of regular troops disguised as militants.

Other Notable Conflicts and Tensions

Siachen Conflict (1984–ongoing):

  • India launched Operation Meghdoot to take control of the Siachen Glacier.
  • Both countries have since maintained troops at extreme altitudes, with harsh weather
    causing more deaths than bullets.

Surgical Strikes (2016):

  • After the Uri terror attack, India conducted surgical strikes across the LoC to destroy
    terror launch pads.

Balakot Airstrike (2019):

  • Following the Pulwama attack, Indian Air Force jets struck a terror camp in Balakot,
    Pakistan.
  • Pakistan responded with air raids, leading to an air combat incident involving Wing
Commander Abhinandan, who was captured and later released.
