You ask an AI to plan your trip for next weekend, and it doesn’t just provide you with a list of travel options, it goes to the web, compares options, fills out the forms and then comes back to ask you for approval.

It’s the concept of the new personal AI agent by Meta, called Meta Muse, which was introduced in September 2026.

Unlike conventional chatbots that typically reply to queries, Muse is meant to act, carry out jobs, and actions.

What Is Meta Muse?

Meta Muse is a personal AI assistant created by Meta. It helps people to manage their day-to-day activities, projects, and extended plans.

You can interact with Muse in much the same way as you interact with another person. Meta claims it’s coming across the Muse app and WhatsApp, and will be released first in the US.

Important difference: Muse doesn’t just tell you what to do. It can also attempt to do the work for you.

Instead of asking, for instance:

“Where is the best place to go on holiday?”

You might assign Muse the task of a goal and have it research, organize, and complete some of the tasks.

What sets Muse apart from a regular AI chatbot?

Most AI chatbots operate in a similar fashion:

Ask AI→ get answers→ take action.

AI agents are designed to make that process a thing of the past:

You give a goal → AI plans → AI takes action → AI asks for approval when needed.

According to Meta, Muse can open up a browser, complete forms, send emails and book travel. For longer tasks, it may also run in the background once the user is out of the app and return when there are changes or for approval.

This might turn the AI into more of a digital assistant and less a search box.

What can Meta Muse do?

Meta has built Muse to do various types of regular tasks.

Some examples include:

Send Emails

Muse can be used to prepare and send emails. Meta claims, though, that it always needs the user’s consent before more sensitive actions, like sending an email.

Plan Travel

In addition to suggesting places to go, Muse can perform the grunt work of planning a vacation, such as surfing the web or completing forms.

Shop Online

Muse can find and buy products. Meta claims that its payment system can be created using a one-time-use card, thereby not revealing the actual card details to the user.

Manage Long-Term Goals

Muse is also crafted to be used when you are looking to create larger objectives, not just questions.

For instance, a user may ask it to write a long term goal and instruct it to put a plan together and to organise resources to carry out the work.

Remember Your Preferences

According to Meta, Muse is able to recall information that is important to a user.

For instance, it could keep track of food preferences when planning a dinner and convert a recipe from Instagram into a list of items needed for shopping.

What is the technology behind Meta Muse?

The one thing that is fascinating about Muse is the system that Meta has created around it.

Muse is hosted on a virtual computer in the cloud, known as Muse Secure VM, that is dedicated to the project. It’s equipped with its own browser and has been built with a goal of separating the AI agent’s and user’s information from other AI agents.

Meta has also unveiled a standalone security system, Sentinel.

Sentinel watches Muse and limits their Internet use. Meta says that Muse is not free to log in to the internet anytime it pleases, but rather must be granted permission to do so.

This is significant as it means that the AI now has the ability to browse websites and communicate with apps, which allows it to have a much greater impact than a chatbot that generates text alone.

What About Privacy and Security?

Naturally, privacy is a concern when an AI has access to email, shopping, calendars and other applications.

Users can choose which apps Muse can access and how much access it will get. Users can also de-activate services and choose not to provide their interactions for training Meta’s AI models.

In addition, Meta notes that it doesn’t even view the users’ passwords or payment details directly when using Muse. Agent is able to use the sensitive credentials without viewing them and it is stored securely.

Meta claims that Muse can request user approval and will keep track of its actions on important actions like purchases and emails.

But one of the biggest challenges for an AI agent is security.

According to internal tests of Muse had revealed reliability and security issues with several instances in which the system failed to operate as intended. The company had also been pushing back the product’s original release in an effort to improve its security.

It looks like a promising technology, but users should still carefully consider what access to give an AI agent.

Why Meta Muse Matters

The launch of Muse represents a bigger change happening in artificial intelligence.

It is no secret that users have been using software for years. We launch an app, look for something, fill a form, compare and finally take the action.

The advent of AI agents might change that dynamic.

In the future, people may more likely instruct an AI about what they would like it to do and have it use applications to accomplish that.

This might free up time for daily tasks like shopping, planning trips, email managing, researching.

It might also alter the way businesses create websites and applications, as users in the future could engage with AI agents rather than manually visiting all the websites themselves.

Can AI Agents Replace some of the common apps?

Not right away, certainly not completely.

Apps and websites will be required; however, the manner in which they interact with these apps and websites may change.

Imagine saying:

“Can you book me into a good hotel for Friday and Saturday in Jaipur which is within my budget?”

Now, you may view Google, check out hotels, check booking sites, compare rates, and book a hotel.

In the agent-driven future, you may simply type in your command to your AI.

The AI might be able to do a lot of the research and comparison and ask you before making an important purchase.

This is the larger concept behind artificial intelligence agents: rather than operating software, spend less time giving the software what you want.

The Challenges Ahead

The most pressing question isn’t if AI agents can do tasks, but rather how to use them to do them more efficiently. It is whether individuals believe that they can count on them for these services.

It’s important to note that the AI can commit an error when writing a paragraph, but this might not be a significant issue.

However, if an email gets sent by AI to the wrong recipient, or the AI buys an item that it shouldn’t, or the AI shares private details in an email, there can be serious issues.

This is why security, user approval, transparency and reliable performance are going to be extremely important as AI agents grow more prevalent.

Reports on Muse, setting the record straight about these issues. Internal tests reportedly revealed some instances of untrustworthy behaviour and security problems.

What do you think Muse should be?

Muse is Meta’s first initiative into the realm of personal superintelligence, as described by its CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

The company’s ultimate goals are to develop an AI that can grasp people’s objectives and enable them to achieve more.

According to Meta, Muse is just the first use of the technology and intends to build on it, including support for AI Glasses in the future.

The key shift for now is that AI now isn’t just answering questions, it’s taking action.

Final Thoughts

This is how fast AI is changing, and that’s just in one case only: the growth of Meta Muse.

The first generation of AI assistants accompanied us in finding information. The younger generations are more concerned about doing things.

While impressive features are important, every day digital tasks could become much easier with Muse, if it is successful. Individuals will have to rely on the fact that their AI companion is secure, dependable and controlled.

It’s not all about using more apps, though, in the future.

It could be a matter of using those apps for the AI.
