Delhi-NCR Diwali 2026 Firecracker Rules

Delhi-NCR Diwali 2026 Firecracker Rules: The Supreme Court has granted the moderate release of green firecrackers in Delhi-NCR this Diwali. However, there is a ton of onerous conditions attached to those permissions, including when you can use them, how you can use them, what kind of cracker you can use, and the QR codes, etc.

Diwali is a festival when families gather to decorate their homes, light up their homes and enjoy festivals. However, in Delhi-NCR, the debates also revolve around an important question on a yearly basis: Is there a ban on firecrackers in Delhi or will there be?

This year the Supreme Court has adopted a "wait and see" stance for 2026. It has decided to allow certified green crackers for two days with specific timing and strict conditions rather than a full ban, throughout the festive period of Diwali.

If you're looking to celebrate Diwali in Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad or Faridabad, here are the latest rules to follow.

Are Firecrackers Allowed in Delhi-NCR This Diwali 2026?

Yes, but only officially green firecrackers will be allowed for a limited time.

The Supreme Court in its order dated 29.10.2026 (available on November 2, 2026) has permitted the bursting of approved green firecrackers on 7th November and 8th November 2026.

Permission is granted for a limited period of time. Delhi-NCR has witnessed a complete ban on firecrackers from November 9, 2026.

This also makes it illegal to use traditional firecrackers, unlicensed firecrackers and barium-infused crackers. Individuals should not use the respite to set off any kind of firecracker.

The Court's ruling was based on such factors as pollution issues, enforcement challenges and the availability of certified “green” crackers. It is not intended to be used for free, but to be used in a controlled way during celebrations.

What Are the Allowed Timings to Burst the Crackers?

The Supreme Court has outlined two time periods on each of the days allowed.

Date Permitted timings
November 7, 2026 6:00 AM–7:00 AM and 8:00 PM–10:00 PM
November 8, 2026 6:00 AM–7:00 AM and 8:00 PM–10:00 PM
November 9 onwards Complete ban restored

It is not legal to use firecrackers outside these times, even if the cracker is a certified green cracker.

There's another critical rule. No bursting of fire crackers will be allowed within 300-metre radius of hospitals, nursing homes, primary and district health centres, old-age homes, educational institutions or notified silence zones.

The sites need to be notified and designated as No Cracker Zones by the authorities.

It is to safeguard those who are especially vulnerable to noise and air pollution (such as patients, elderly, students and others).

What Happened in August 2026? Why Did the Supreme Court Question CPCB on Noise Limits?

Relaxing firecracker ban began much before the last Diwali order.

The Supreme Court had requested the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to review and take a call on some relaxation in the limit of noise in the upcoming festival season in August 2026.

The concern over the safety of newer formulations of firecrackers added to the complications.

The CPCB pointed out their concerns on barium loaded green crackers containing barium nitrate and CSIR-NEERI discussed newer formulations and minimisation of emissions.

The Court wanted to see more testing and examination, rather than presume that all products that are marketed as “green” are safe.

It has been clearly stated from the last meeting held in Delhi-NCR that firecracker made with barium and products which are not approved by CSIR-NEERI are not allowed under the temporary relaxation.

This is important as a green label does not mean that a conventional or unauthorised firecracker is legal.

How to Know if Crackers Are Certified Green? Check the QR Code

The QR codes on products are one of the most significant components of the 2026 order.

The Supreme Court has ordered green crackers be sold in totally sealed boxes. A QR code will be provided for each individual box, which will be a unique code for each product and batch.

When you're looking to buy a green cracker, consider the following:

  • Own QR code for the product: Each box will have its own QR code. You are not allowed to copy or transfer a code.

  • Manufacturer details: The details provided by the manufacturer ought to be found by scanning the code.

  • NEERI Registration: Check the details of the registration provided with CSIR-NEERI.

  • PESO or District Magistrate licence: The necessary details of the licence should be available.

  • Formulation and test certificate: QR code should contain information on the approved formulation and testing.

Avoid buying the box if the QR code is not present, not working or contains information that is not corresponding to the product.

It's important to also keep in mind that a label is printed green and a shopkeeper verbally says it is green are not sufficient. The product must be certified and identified as per the requirements of the Court.

Where Can You Get Green Crackers in Delhi-NCR?

The Supreme Court has restricted where green crackers can be sold, to only specific sites set by district authorities.

The green crackers will be sold from 4th November to 6th November 2026, approved by the Court, under the conditions set by the Court.

Important Rules:

  • Approved green crackers are only allowed to be sold by licensed traders.

  • Only sales at specific places will be available.

  • Purchasing and selling of any kind via online ecommerce is not allowed.

  • Crackers that are conventional or unauthorised are not eligible to be sold as "green crackers".

  • Boxes must be completely closed and must have a product specific QR code.

The Court has also directed the authorities to not allow “illegal and conventional firecrackers” to enter into Delhi-NCR and inspection of the vehicles as and when required.

So it is not legal to order crackers online, or buy a cracker from an unlicensed retailer.

What Will Happen if a Person Breaks the Firecracker Rules?

The Supreme Court has ordered stringent action against the manufacturers, traders and others who do not follow its instructions.

These can result in:

  • Confiscation: Illegal and unauthorised firecrackers can be seized by enforcement authorities.

  • Licence cancellation: Traders found violating the directions can have their licences cancelled immediately and be prohibited from selling during the remaining permitted period.

  • Forfeiture of security: Manufacturers and traders must furnish monetary security, which can be forfeited if they violate the Court's directions.

  • Legal prosecution: Authorities can initiate proceedings against those involved in selling or distributing prohibited products.

For individuals, bursting crackers outside permitted hours or in restricted zones can also invite action under applicable noise pollution and environmental laws, including the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules and the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.

The exact legal consequences depend on the nature of the violation and the applicable provisions. It is therefore better to follow the Court's directions rather than assume that a small violation will go unnoticed.

How Are the 2026 Rules Different from Last Year's Diwali?

The Supreme Court also allowed a temporary relaxation for green crackers during Diwali 2025.

However, the permission was limited to a specific period, designated sale locations and fixed bursting hours. Online sales were prohibited, and only approved green crackers with QR codes could be sold.

For 2026, the Court has again adopted a temporary relaxation, but the dates and conditions have been specified afresh.

The key dates to remember are November 7 and 8 for bursting approved green crackers, with the complete ban returning from November 9.

Last year's permission should not be used to decide what is allowed this year. The latest 2026 order takes priority.

Final Thoughts

The Supreme Court's 2026 decision gives Delhi-NCR residents limited permission to celebrate Diwali with certified green firecrackers. But it is not a complete relaxation of the existing restrictions.

Only approved products with valid product-specific QR codes can be used, and bursting is allowed only during the specified hours on November 7 and 8. No-cracker zones, the barium restriction and the ban on online sales must also be followed.

Before buying anything, check the latest instructions from local authorities and verify the product's QR code. A green label does not mean a cracker is pollution-free or automatically legal.

Diwali is a festival of lights, and celebrating responsibly can help protect the health and comfort of everyone around us.
